HORSEMANSHIP LESSONS

IMG_0787.jpeg

WHAT IS HORSEMANSHIP?

Think of horsemanship as the umbrella under which all aspects of equestrian pursuits fall. If horsemanship is the umbrella, the spokes holding up the umbrella consist of riding, bodywork, saddle fitting, ground work, learning about the equine brain, managing the horse's feet, different training methods, etc. These are some of the subjects that comprise of keeping your horse happy and healthy, both physically and mentally. Many great riders know nothing about horsemanship. Many horsemen are not great riders. We endeavor to work WITH our horses instead of forcing them to comply.

There are certain established methods for managing how you approach horses, how you put on the halter, pick out their feet, brush them, tack them up, etc. Having seen so many injuries from poor training and ineffective techniques, even by experienced individuals, we will take you through the common sense methods we have learned from horse masters throughout the years.

Establishing connection and forming a relationship is not done through coercing your horse to do what you want but through establishing trust first. This trust must be reciprocal. Imagine a 1200lb prey animal that lives its life in constant anxiety, then imagine trying to communicate to that animal that you can protect and lead it.

Maybe you have a fear of horses. Horses are way more fearful of you than you are of them. They are marvelous guides that love to connect with others, both equine and human. Come and meet our horses, learn to develop your trust.

TAI CHI & QIGONG FOR EQUESTRIANS

MENTAL

LIMBIC RESONANCE is the term given to the non-verbal syncing that can happen between horse and human using the brain's lymbic system. Once we enter the flow state, this connection takes over.

PHYSICAL

Note how the standing postures of tai chi and qigong are the same as the riding posture. In our tai chi and qigong workshops, we teach not only the physical element of equestrian balance but the mental elements of awareness, softness and communication.

This enables you to soften your riding style, become more aware of your horse and your horse's movement and this enables more connection.

Tai chi and qigong teach the "soft overcomes hard" principle, which is how ALL riders should be working with their horses.

Breathing exercises, standing balance exercises, and Pushing Hands exercises will make you a better rider AND a better horseman.
